Your Guide to Storing Furniture

Whether you’re moving, downsizing, or simply decluttering, storing furniture can be a daunting task. Items are often large, expensive and difficult to pack up and move. But with a little planning and preparation, you can easily protect your furniture and keep it in good condition until you’re ready to collect it.

Clean and Inspect Your Furniture

Before you start packing, take some time to clean your furniture thoroughly. This will help to remove any dirt, dust, or debris that could attract pests or cause damage. You should also inspect your furniture for any signs of wear and tear. If there are any repairs that need to be made, do them now before you store your furniture.

Disassemble Large Pieces

If possible, disassemble large pieces of furniture before storing them. For example, you could disassemble a bed by removing the headboard, footboard, and slats. This will make them easier to pack and transport and it will also help to protect them from damage. It will also maximise the storage space you have available and allow you to fit more inside.

Pack Your Furniture Carefully

When packing your furniture, use sturdy materials that will protect it from damage. You could use blankets, sheets, bubble wrap, or even cardboard boxes. Another good idea is to use old clothes that you don’t want to take to your next property as padding. Be sure to pack any fragile pieces of furniture separately and use plenty of padding to prevent them from breaking.

Label Your Boxes

Moving house is a complicated affair and it’s easy for your belongings to get lost in the chaos. Always label each box clearly with the contents and the date to keep things organised. This will help you to find what you’re looking for when you need it, and it will also help to prevent damage during storage.

Store Your Furniture in a Cool, Dry Place

Avoid storing your furniture in damp or humid conditions, as this could lead to mould or mildew growth. A temperature-controlled storage unit is an ideal way to combat this as this will prevent the growth of unwanted mould that could damage your furniture.
